Equality and Diversity Commitment

NHS Shetland is a major employer and service provider. The needs and aspirations of our staff and service users will obviously vary according to individual circumstances, but the Board recognises that their preferences and choices about employment and service provision must not be disadvantages by age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief or by sexual orientation.

NHS Shetland recently published its revised vision, values and Board objectives, including the renewed values to be 'Equitable - taking account of and valuing diversity, promoting equality, fairness' and 'Person centered - in the partnerships between patients, their families and those delivering healthcare services we respect individual needs and values and demonstrate care & compassion, continuity, clear communication and shared decision-making.'

Statement of Leadership

NHS Shetland recognises that valuing and embracing diversity is key to providing high quality, patient-led services. The Board takes pride in serving a diverse population and is committed to promoting a culture of diversity and equality of opportunity, access, dignity and fairness, both in the services we provide and in our employment practices.

We will do this by valuing individual difference and acknowledging the potential contribution all employees, workers and members of the public can make to the continued development of the organisation which will in turn improve the services we provide. The services we deliver aim to put all people in Shetland at the centre of the health and social care agenda. Our core business is our ability to design and support the delivery of services that can respond to the differing needs of our population.
