Dr Kirsty Brightwell, Medical Director (Executive Director)
Kirsty joined NHS Shetland as Medical Director and GP in July 2020. Following University in Aberdeen, Kirsty has worked clinically throughout Scotland and New Zealand as a junior doctor. Kirsty undertook GP training in Inverness before moving to the Western Isles in 2008.
She is a BASICS trained GP and has worked in a variety of Clinical Lead and GP roles in remote and rural Scotland. She became the Cluster Quality Lead and NHS Western Isles Associate Medical Director for Primary Care in 2016, working within the Western Isles Health and Social Care Partnership. She was in cohort 1 of Project Lift's Leadership Cubed programme and holds an executive role on the Scottish Association of Medical Directors. Kirsty is a trained mentor and coach and is the Whistleblowing Executive for the Board. Kirsty is a keen swimmer who hails originally from London via Malaysia and New Zealand. She has two boys who are fanatical about mountain biking. Her husband invents airborne wind energy systems.
